OPERA MONTE CASSINO & CASA MONTE CASSINO
Casa Monte Cassino is a humanitarian non-profit organization, founded in 1987 by Fred Vittiglio and takes its name from the founder’s hometown in Italy.
In the beginning, Casa Monte Cassino offered free room and board and assistance for the families of Italian children who were in need of treatment, for premature retinopathy, at specialized medical clinics in Boston.
This hospitality was given at the founder’s house and at those of other families willing to help.
The requests were so many, that it became necessary to find an alternative housing solution for the guests. The answer was found when the Archdiocese in its generosity, made available one of its buildings, situated in the heart of North End (Boston’s Little Italy).
This offer was greatly appreciated, because the location and the Italian-American neighborhood, allowed the "guest families" to better adapt to their new environment, especially when they were not aware of the local customs or language.
The founder, his brother Guido and other volunteers, with the generous contributions from the Italian immigrants and their organizations, were able to renovate the building making it suitable to properly receive the families.
It was in such manner that what is today known as "Casa Monte Cassino" came into being.
The passing of the years, with the diffusion especially in Italy, of the surgical techniques, have seen a drop in the demand for this specific surgical procedure. The function of the organization however has not diminished. To the contrary, it has expanded. Casa Monte Cassino, houses now families from all over the world and with different medical needs. Priority is given however, to infants and small children with specific oculistic problems, keeping in this way true to the founders’ intentions and dreams.
